Sugar Plum Box
I originally propped this version of The Nutcracker in 2018. The different sugar plum box was an addition in 2020. When the theatres shut down, the artistic director of Ballet Vero Beach decided to stage portions of The Nutcracker outdoors and film it to stream online because he wanted the show to go on and for the children who had been in his classes preparing for the production still had a chance to shine. It even aired on the local PBS channel a couple of times during the holiday season.
One side is done in English and one in Spanish.
The base is cardboard storage box from a craft store. The image of the dancers and the wording were requested by the artistic director, so I incorporated those into my design. I based my design on Victorian chocolate boxes. The box was painted gold and then overlaid with specialty paper, trims, and painted paper doilies for the lace effect.
